Radio host, Jody Maberry, talks with travel writer, Connie Pearson on starting local.
Travel writing is actually Connie’s fourth career. She was a piano performance major, music teacher, missionary in Ecuador and now, a travel writer.
Connie’s son is actually the one who inspired her to get started; he saw an article about travel writing and shared it with her. Being naturally curious, Connie did a little research and discovered us.
“I signed up for the Ultimate Travel Writer’s Workshop in Denver, Colorado, hopped on a plane and made the leap.”
Since attending the workshop, Connie has had 65 published articles in 13 different publications—the sky is the limit and she has all kinds of plans for the future.
Starting out, Connie didn’t have an unlimited travel budget so she took the advice she learned in the workshop and started local.
Connie lives in North Alabama and initially had no idea what she could find to write about. But it turns out there are a lot of interesting places and things in North Alabama—and not a lot of competition.
“I’ve found some amazing things in North Alabama. In fact, 22 of my articles have been within 2 hours of my house.”
Connie shares her discovery of true southern gems like the Rattlesnake Saloon and the Coon Dog Cemetery.
She also shares a moving story about Tom’s Wall – a tribute to a fascinating Native American woman.
