Great Escape Radio host, Jody Maberry, and Director Lori Allen, discuss the importance of making a fast start—even if it isn’t perfect.

Lori started thinking about the importance of taking a first step—even when you’re not ready or trained—while watching her daughter in the swimming pool.

“When my daughter Charlie was four years old, she wouldn’t put her face in the water. But by the next year, she was diving to the bottom of the pool.”

She wasn’t actually swimming, just doing a dog-paddling type of move. Lori knew she could learn how to really swim with the help of lessons and she promised Charlie she would get her lessons and goggles.

“You’ll be swimming all the way across the pool after you take lessons.”

But Charlie had other ideas—she swam across the pool THAT day. She didn’t have training or the right goggles, but she made a decision she was going to do it and she did.

“Watching Charlie in the pool that day, I realized this is kind of how everything important happens in our life. It comes down to decision. The decision to do something.”

It’s not necessarily the people with the best skills, the best equipment, the most training that get things done. This is true in sports, in life and in photography and travel writing.

The stories Lori and Jody share are inspiring. And, if they inspire you to get started—to jump in the water quickly—you can find more information on photography here: greatescapepublishing.com/start/photography and travel writing here: greatescapepublishing.com/start/travelwriting.
